The Energy Network (Public Agency Program or Program) offers services to all types of public agencies, including school districts. Improving energy efficiency in schools helps to create a healthier and safer environment -- an environment where students and teachers can thrive. Exterior lighting retrofits can enhance teacher and student security while mechanical retrofits can reduce student sick days due to improved indoor air quality.
Currently, three school districts leverage The Energy Network's Public Agency Program to improve energy efficiency throughout their schools - Ventura Unified School District (VUSD or District), Conejo Valley Unified School District, and Orange Unified School District. Since enrolling in the Program, VUSD has worked alongside The Energy Network to implement lighting and mechanical retrofits at 10 different district facilities to modernize equipment, increase efficiency, improve facilities overall and save money.
"The Energy Network has done a wonderful job and we both have learned a lot since we began working together. We are happy to be part of a collaborative partnership to save energy and the environment through The Energy Network."
-Dave Marshall, Facilities Services Director,
Addressing outdated lighting was one of VUSD's main energy efficiency objectives for many years and by enrolling in The Energy Network's Public Agency Program, the District was able to see these projects come to fruition. The Program worked with VUSD to break the project into two phases -- phase 1 and phase 2 -- enabling the District to retrofit and replace old lighting technologies with those offering increased efficiency and improved quality. The Program also provided project management support to VUSD throughout the project -- including construction management services, procurement and contract guidance for contractor selection, coordination with investor-owned utilities, utility incentive application assistance, and engineering support.
Phase 1 of the lighting project has now been completed, providing the District with annual cost savings of approximately $110,000 and annual energy savings of over 785,000 kWh. In addition, VUSD is expected to receive more than $29,000 in utility incentives. Phase 2 of the lighting project, as well as the additional mechanical projects, are expected to be completed in 2017.
